Historical Exhaustion Requires More Than Self-Care

Hey Queen Hey,
How are you truly quenching your soul’s thirst right now?
If you’ve been following along on Instagram, you’ve seen snippets of my personal soul care routine—everything from adult coloring and intentional journaling to long, medicinal baths. Your girl has been working overtime to tend to her mind, body, and spirit.
But let’s be real for a second: do you know what it feels like to hit the kind of burnout you can’t self-care your way out of?
When Burnout Becomes Historical Exhaustion
It’s that deep, bone-weary soul exhaustion that comes from continuously navigating systems designed to disturb our peace, safety, stability, and sense of belonging. Lately, it hasn’t just felt like burnout—it feels like historical exhaustion. The kind of generational weight that threatens to dehydrate our spirit.
So I’ve been thinking deeply on how we rehydrate. What needs watering in your life right now?
Surviving the high-pressure environment of collective grief and rage requires far more than a spa day, a woosah playlist, or even an amazing therapy session. This level of soul-shaking demands emotional honesty, unfiltered truth, and deep community rootedness.
Can you meet yourself in those raw spaces? What does soul care look like when we stop keeping it cute and actually address the justifiable rage that comes from simmering in the crockpot of injustice in America?
James Baldwin reminded us that “To be a Negro in this country and to be relatively conscious is to be in a state of rage almost all the time.” That truth rings louder by the day. So how do we protect our light and replenish our well in these times?
How I’m Practicing Soul Rehydration Right Now
- Sacred Rhythms: I don’t play about my morning ritual—a minimum 30-minute unplugged window, intentional movement, gratitude journaling, and a slow, mindful cup of tea or coffee.
- Emotional Honesty: Regularly checking in with myself to ask, “What am I deprived of right now?” and making a clear plan to source those exact needs.
- Radical Boundaries: Guarding my peace and finite energy like my life depends on it.
- Joy Bubbles: Intentionally creating pockets of pure joy—vibrant music, unfiltered catch-ups with my besties, and soaking in the sun.
- Ubuntu Medicine: Leaning into community through our Ubuntu Queens’ Reading Circle and intentional brunch dates with my sisters.
- Civic Activation: Channeling righteous energy into collective agency—from health policy advocacy to stepping up at the ballot box.
